Based on the curriculum of the private teacher education programme Islamische Religion an Pflichtschulen (Islamic religious education at compulsory schools), students of the master’s programme in Islamic Religious Education familiarise themselves with the following subject areas: intensive exegetical discussion of specific texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah that serve the objectives of the degree programme; theories and models in education and Islamic religious education; academic research, including gender-specific issues; history and development of traditions and positions in Islamic studies, in particular those that affect the life of Muslims as citizens in a democratic society.

Study Programme

The master’s programme consists of modules covering the following topics: Islamic studies: the Qur’an, the Prophet’s thinking and acting; doctrines and everyday religious life in Islam; Islamic ethics, anthropology and spheres of Muslim life; principles of Islamic religious education; European cultural history and Islamic religious education in a European context; philosophy of science and epistemology in religious education; empirical research methods in religious education; subject-specific didactic education; interreligious and intercultural learning; Islamic subject-specific didactics for upper secondary schools and subject-related internship; Islamic religious education (specialisation) and school development; and Muslim community work. In addition, students have to write a master’s thesis and complete the corresponding seminar and pass a master’s examination.

    After Graduation

    Graduates are qualified to pursue a career in the following areas:

    • as German-speaking Islamic Religious Education teachers at state higher secondary schools in Austria
    • to present and explain Islamic contents in a competent and contemporary manner in the respective social context and from the perspective of gender equality
    • to engage in intercultural and interreligious dialogue with religions and world views based on the ability to exercise self-criticism, tolerance as well as willingness and ability to cooperate
    • to carry out activities in the areas of community or chaplaincy and social work.

    Graduate Survey

    The University asks graduates to provide their opinion about the degree programme immediately after graduating. The survey results show how graduates evaluate the degree programme they completed from a subject-specific and organisational perspective.
