Exemption from the entrance exam procedure

Previous studies

You have already been admitted to the University of Vienna to a bachelor programme with entrance exam procedure and paused your studies? You may resume studying that specific bachelor programme without having to retake the entrance exam/aptitude assessment. This exemption does not include the bachelor programme in Psychology; if you have paused this bachelor programme, you must pass the entrance exam again.

Use our contact form to send us a message within the admission period. Select the topic “Entrance exam procedure”, indicate that you would like to resume your studies and attach a scan of your (student) ID.

Exchange students

Incoming exchange students taking part in the following mobility programmes are exempt from entrance exams/aptitude assessments:

- Erasmus+
- Non-EU Student Exchange Programme (formerly Joint Study)
- CEEPUS

Your point of contact at the University of Vienna is the International Office.

Change of degree programme

  • You are currently studying Business Administration or International Business Administration at the University of Vienna and want to switch between these two bachelor programmes?
  • You are currently studying Computer Science or Business Informatics at the University of Vienna and want to switch between these two bachelor programmes?
  • You are currently studying Sociology, Political Science or Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna and want to switch between these bachelor programmes?

Law students of other universities

Applicants who are/were admitted to the diploma programme Law (“Diplomstudium Rechtswissenschaften”) at a different university and have recognisable academic achievements (i.e. compulsory or elective courses, compulsory modules) of at least 60 ECTS are exempted from the entrance exam procedure if they want to continue their degree programme at the University of Vienna.
This list (in German) enables you to evaluate whether or not you have achieved sufficient recognisable ECTS.

Send your transcript(s) of records and a scan of your personal ID by e-mail to anerkennung.rewi@univie.ac.at until 2 September 2019 at latest. At the time of submission, you must already have completed these 60 ECTS.

After a close evaluation of your documents, you will receive a confirmation by the StudiesServiceCenter Law by e-mail, provided you fulfil the requirements. Create your u:account in u:space, log in to u:space and complete the registration.
Send this confirmation together with a scan of the documents required for admission to the degree programme via contact form (select “Entrance exam procedure”) to the Admission Office until 5 September 2019. You will receive further information by e-mail.

If the submitted documents do not prove that you have recognisable achievements of at least 60 ECTS, you have to participate in the entrance exam procedure for the diploma programme Law at the next possible time.

Students of a Teacher Education programme

You must provide a confirmation of registration or your diploma from your university/university college of teacher education.

You are also exempt from the entrance exam if:

  • you have paused the Teacher Education programme at the University of Vienna and now wish to resume your studies
  • you would like to change your teaching subjects
  • you have been studying according to an old version of the curriculum and would like to be submitted to the current one
  • you are submitted to the current curriculum ex officio (e.g. due to the expiration of the old curriculum).

Active teachers without a teacher education

Persons who have not completed a Teacher Education programme for secondary schools, but have completed another university degree and are now teaching at a primary or secondary school within the EU/EEA, are exempt from the aptitude assessment at the University of Vienna.

You need to provide an official confirmation from the headmaster of the school you teach at as proof.

Participation in an aptitude assessment for teacher education at another university in Austria

Persons who have successfully passed an aptitude assessment for a Teacher Education programme for secondary schools at another Austrian university or university college for teacher education do not have to participate in the aptitude assessment at the University of Vienna for the same academic year.

This also applies to persons who have participated in an aptitude assessment at one of the following universities and want to combine the teaching subject they are studying with one at the University of Vienna:

  • University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna: Music Education
  • University of Applied Arts Vienna: Art and Communication Practices (Fine Arts)
Design, Architecture and Environment for Art Education (Design and Technology)

  • Academy of Fine Arts Vienna: Art and Education (Art Education)
    Design and Context (Technical Crafts)
Fashions and Styles (Textile Crafts/Textile Design)
Design in Context (Technical and Textile Crafts)

If one of your teaching subjects is offered by the aforementioned universities, create a u:account in u:space, log in and complete your registration. It is not possible to submit an application for admission to only one teaching subject in u:space.

You must already have been admitted to one of the above universities in order to finish the admission procedure at the University of Vienna. In addition to your other admission documents, you must also present your student record sheet (Studienblatt) or your confirmation of enrolment (Studienbestätigung) from that other university to the Admission Office at the University of Vienna during the admission period.

Please note: an admission to a Teacher Education programme including one of the above teaching subjects and the specialisation Inclusive Education is not possible until the aforementioned universities have joined the North-East teaching network (“Verbund Nord-Ost”).
